Smokefree England Website Link

A Healthier England from 1st July 2007

From 1st July 2007 virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces in England will become smokefree. A smokefree England will ensure a healthier environment, so everyone can socialise, relax, travel, shop and work free from secondhand smoke.

The following information and links will provide you with information about the new legislation and lets you know how you can play an important part in creating a smokefree England.

Business and Employers

Employers, managers and those in charge of smokefree premises and vehicles will need to:

  • display 'no smoking' signs in smokefree premises,
  • take reasonable steps to ensure that staff, customers/members and visitors are aware that premises and vehicles are legally required to be smokefree,
  • ensure that no one smokes in smokefree premises or vehicles.

You may also want to take these supportive measures:

  • remove ashtrays from smokefree areas
  • develop a smokefree policy in consultation with staff
  • provide your staff and customers with support to quit smoking
  • ensure that your staff and customers know where they can smoke if they choose to.

Quitting Smoking

For smokers who want to quit, the NHS offers a range of excellent free support including local NHS Stop Smoking Services and the Together Programme. If you would like support and advice on stopping smoking, call the NHS smoking helpline on 0800 169 0 169 or visit the website.
